possible creative gallery
i was thinking of making an ad for facebook and creating a product for customer to view and seeing if i can get feed back for it. so kind alike a survey stating if its something people are interested in and what not. Not really sure how i am going to go about doing that but that's what i'm feeling would be a good choice for me with this creative gallery.
After viewing some examples from last semester im still unsure.
I like the collaborative theme. Having multiple people work to to create something interesting is a great idea. I like thinking of a blog post similar to the lost project, what if you lost something but geared more towards my project. That's a great concept for a creative gallery. I like Jessica's video about the callbo for graffiti. the fact that its rel and is a running record of the work she put into her work is one thing that draws me to it. I would like to do that but i'm not sure how i could turn it to my topic. Ive always thought it would be funny to make a facebook page out of card board and wear it. If i have the time which i do i might recruit someone for that, itwould be on the funnier side of things.

rough draft
heres my awful paper.. :(
i like my topic i feel like its pretty solid but i need to support why i think its good and positive for businesses. i need to work on my thesis statement and make it stronger.I don't even think i have a full thesis statement yet. kinda just a cluster of thoughts.
um i hate it... i don't like any of it right now it needs way way way more work. I wish i had more time its not even finished.
i haven't put Shirky's argument in on social networking so i have 3 pages of actual text, averaging out to be 1000 words short of what we need so luckily i have time to fix and finish because i'm gonna need it.

youtube author
youtube allows a number of users to upload interesting videos or video blogs about themselves sharing their life. Its a visual creative way of allowing people into your interest and life. Facebook is a communication back and forth style of multimedia
everyone is familiar with the "Leave Britney alone" blogger who was so emotional over all the hype about Britney and her life that he made a very emotional blog over the false statements the media was printing. Can one say that this makes Chris an author. A multimedia author on top of that. Yes he is creating something original and placing his face to the object but many people have recreated this blog since he has posted it.
Would on say that guys or girls singing and remaking songs that have already been released is a form of authorship. Granted there is the users own twist to it but it is not using their own original thoughts or words. But it a sense it is still being publish, does copyright fall into play here, and if it does then how.
For me i feel that to be called an author on youtube is to create something original. The charlie bit me, original and funny in a sense but is an everyday occurrence. Granted it was its own video it has been recreated so many times and placed back on to youtube. The video we watched today in class, definitely a form of authorship, something original and took tons of time to make.

in class blog post
i would probably lean more towards social media. Social media is geared towards social interaction. Since i am looking at online social networks and how businesses use it to their advantages i think that taking key elements from "Here Comes Everybody" will help add to my paper and support my topic.
I'm still working on the main topics of the paper and trying to narrow down what i feel a multimedia author is but so far i feel that it is an author who can branch out over all media aspects. Facebook, twitter, fan-fiction, the news, audio, music, and any other form one may think of. Being able to excel and more then one field, (multi) is a crucial aspect to what possibly makes a multimedia author. I feel that it does enable room for creativity. An author is not tied down and able to spread their wings and experience new and enlighten pieces of the media. The option is what makes it work and gives a positive reaction. In regards to online social networking and the how businesses use it in a productive manner, it allows them to reach thousands of people for a small amount of money. Not only is it a more effective option but it also saves the company money and gives them more alternatives to the tradition norms of advertising.
One sentence to explain my topic:
Facebook: creating a new face for advertising. how hard and how effective is it?
arguments:
facebook has made it possible for businesses to establish themselves. It has changed the traditional terms of advertising and allowed companies to reach thousands of people everyday. We as users are exposed to these ad's and 1/2 the time we are unaware of it. Its an effective way for businesses to get their products out and about on the main stream market. Facebook has changed advertising and made it easier for a small business to get their message out.

University Chicago Law Review 28 Dec.2008:181-201.JSTOR.Web.1 Mar. 2010
Whether we believe it of not when we place information online there is always that factor that it becomes visible to everyone. Julie Cohen article, “Privacy, Visibility, Transparency, and Exposure” is a perfect example of how privacy is violated online. Using examples from different doctrines such as the Privacy doctrine, Cohen effectively reiterates her point on how easily accessible personal information is and how in turn some use our information to expose us.
This article is a credible source and holds a good amount of information on how our privacy is breeched as we use the internet (leaning more towards social networks) for our own personal use.
Looking at some of my other sources you will notice a number of them state that Facebook allows advertisers to use the information you place in your profile to target certain member for products. I find it interesting what Cohen states about this and how the privacy doctrine in a way goes against this. Its particularly gear towards my topic since facebook has a contract with all users stating that the information place on their page can be used. This includes pictures, background information, interest, hobbies, and even relationship status. I am going to take this information from the article and use it as a way to play devils advocate and argue about the precautions facebook had to take when creating this new platform for advertisements.
"Could Facebook Change Web Advertising? : NPR." NPR : National Public Radio:News& Analysis,World, US, Music & Arts:NPR.Web.23Feb.2010.http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=15994984
Could Facebook really change web advertising? A radio show from November 5, 2007 zoned in on Facebook’s new partnership. The host on the National Public radio pulled information on Facebook being used for business promotion. Facebook in 2007 was pulling in 15 billion dollars and with this new partnership they have developed will average out making more then that. The radio show goes through a number of background information on the actual aspect of Facebook and what each page may contain. Chiming in on how popular Facebook is with students in general, the host pulled 3 students from Berkeley who admitted to using their Facebook countless times a day. 3 students were interviewed in the show and asked to enlighten listeners about the content within their pages. Once each student had introduced their information Cyrus Farivar announced that the three are "volunteering information that advertisers dream about, especially because they're in the highly sought after 18 to 34-year-old demographic". Pulling some executive directors of companies and their views on the situation adds strong support to my argument, “marketers can use and advertisers can use to get to you at a very different level - at a point in which the time is right for the message." David Blum stated within the interview.
This source does pose some limitations. Although it is an interesting piece of information it is only a short exert of supporting details to help prove my argument. On the other hand with its small exert of information it is full of details that support my topic. It is important for people using Facebook to realize that what they place on their pages are being exposed to companies who then us that information to promote a product of interest.
This resource is useful to my project simply because as I stated before it is on point with my topic. I am looking at the different ways companies’ use Facebook as a means of promotion versus just a form of communication with peers.
Dickenson, Jacqueline."Stuff History: The Past as a Resource in the Production
Of Advertising Material."Advertising & Society Review 10.3(2009):Project Muse. Web. 1Mar.2010.
Jacqueline Dickenson did a study on the effectiveness of recreating old advertisements and what works when it boils down to it. By running a number of old advertisements and the new recreations of them she came to the conclusion that people struggle with creating advertisements due to the limited platform they are given to work on. Being well aware of the history behind an ad does in turn make or break the success. An example given within the article is the M&M ads on TV. We all know and love the classic aspect of it and that is what makes it so effective. The level of familiarity consumer has with a product allows comfort to be present.
The study is well developed and has some limitations in regard to online social networking. I feel as if this study can provide evidence on what works within advertisings and help me to establish a base for where advertising is in regards to social networks. Is it working effectively, or is it just taking up space. This study may be able to point me in the right direction for some key underlying ideas.
"Facebook's secret rate card-Feature-Gawker."Valleywag-Gawker.1 Mar.2010..
What does a company have to pay to buy their way onto facebook? A rate card by definition is a document detailing prices for various ad placement options. Believe it or not facebook has recently stooped to that level. On February of 2010 a rate card for Facebook was found. Although Facebook’s representatives have tried to deny that this popular online social network has began to participate in Rate Cards once confronted about the newest findings Barker quickly changes her story, stating "I just don't think it's a rate card in the traditional sense." Starting with different opportunities for sponsorship facebook offers companies an effective form of advertising to a young demographic (18) to a more established demographic, (34). Within the article, they allow readers to view the different prices, opportunities, and package deals that companies can invest in.
I feel that this source is a great and definitely supportive source for my topic. Although I am not geared towards only one online network it is interesting to see how much companies are willing to pay for a small advertising spot. I feel that this is an important source; it adds actual numbers to my research and allows for a dependable source of information.
Some viewers are unaware that the advertising even exist on online social networks but it’s important for us as viewers to be aware of what we are being exposed to. Its an interesting concept and a neat idea that not only are these very popular online networks used as a form of communication but now we see more so that they branch off into other areas as well like a form of advertisement.

Everyone is aware that there are a number of sites you can buy advertising on. The one perk to facebook is that you can set the demographic of the consumers in which you are trying to reach. The filter action allows you to “target your ads to a specific age, sex, and even things like what school they attend or their sexual orientation.” This technology is bound to make Facebook’s newest platform a true success. Within the article a display and instructions on how the target generator works is present. Going with age, sex, education, workplaces, relationship status, and interest allows a business to zone in on what exact customer they are searching for. Information on why it has become so popular is key as well and listed for the reader towards the bottom. These reasons include:
The demographics are far more accurate than most data (age, sex, gender preference, relationship, etc.)
The "approximate reach" number gives you great insight into your target market size (even if you never place an ad)
The article is a very well written and information filled piece. With graphs, illustrations, and supporting details this is sure to be a positive attribute to my paper. I intend on taking the information given on the actual target filter and using that as a away to generate a well developed topic.

The introduction of pages for businesses. A page is a way to create a profile for a company which will allow you to post advertisements, weekly ads, coupons, and even weekly specials for certain member of you page. They are a free form of promotion, you can suggest people become a fan of the page but you cannot ask people to be friends or to be fans of it, strictly suggestions. Groups and events are both another branch of effective ways to promote information for business.
Even with these groups, event, and pages facebook still has other forms of advertising to offer for business. Applications do cost money but they allow you to purchase advertising tools, which can expose your organization to new users periodically throughout the day.
All of these are effective ways to use media as a form of advertisement in regards to Facebook. This information present in this article shows that there are other options on facebook that make it easy for promotional needs. Using facebook as a form of advertisements will benefit the organization and allow their product or ad to reach thousand of people every hour.
This is helpful information and gives me more tools to build upon with my argument. I am able to see how what else facebook has to offer for businesses.

Facebook’s new platform is allowing a new a great new opportunity for marketers to get involved with online social networks and dive head fist into a youthful thriving market.
